This tree is native to Sri Lanka, Seychelles and Madagascar. In late 19th century the tree was introduced by Germany settlers when Tanzania was part of the German empire.

Based on a deep study conducted on a visual, essential oil content and DNA aspects about the similarity of Tanzanian cinnamon trees with those from Sri Lanka and Madagascar, the study show up that the physical characteristics and chemical composition of volatile oil of the cinnamon in Tanzania, from Sri Lanka and Madagascar are similar. Moreover, DNA analysis allows to attest that the CINNAMON IN TANZANIA IS CINNAMOMUM ZEYLANICUM.

On average Cinnamomum zeylanicum inherently contains low concentrations of Coumarin in its bark.
